Hill of Tarvit Mansion House and Garden

Hill of Tarvit Mansion House & Garden.

Step back to the early 1900s and enjoy a grand day out, Edwardian-style! Play our hickory lawn game and a spot of croquet, try your hand at billiards, outwit your chums in fun parlour games and more.

Hill of Tarvit is one of Scotland's finest Edwardian mansionhouses, replete with a splendid collection of antiques, furniture, Chinese porcelain and superb paintings by Sir Henry Raeburn, Allan Ramsay and eminent Dutch artists.

The original 17th-century Wemyss House was remodelled in 1906 by Sir Robert Lorimer for wealthy jute manufacturer Frederick Sharp to showcase his outstanding collection of French, Chippendale-style and locally influenced furniture, porcelain and art accumulated by several generations of the prosperous Sharp family.

Surrounding Hill of Tarvit are gardens, woods, open heath and parkland to explore. Robert Lorimer also designed the landscaped gardens, with formal lawns, yew hedging, flowering borders and a sunken rose garden.

One of the property’s major attractions is the original 9-hole hickory club golf course, which is now completely restored, giving golfers a rare opportunity to turn back the clock and enjoy the game as it was played in Edwardian times.

Take a walk out on to the estate, where the gardens offer a good mix of formality and nature, from the rose garden and manicured lawns to a variety of interesting woodland walks.

If you’re a keen golfer you’ll probably want to play a round at the Kingarrock 9-hole golf course, which has been fully restored as the original hickory club course. Relive the game in Edwardian style, with authentic hickory clubs and balls.

Finally, enjoy some refreshments and delicious food in our bright conservatory tearoom and browse the shop for Scottish gifts. The estate also hosts a range of seasonal events, including a Christmas Fair, music recitals, plant sales and a sponsored 10k walk for Marie Curie Cancer Care – not forgetting the Cadbury’s Easter egg hunt!
