St Andrews Farmhouse Cheese Company
St Andrews Farm House Cheese not only has an excellent reputation for its cheese, it also offers "Superb Coffee!" along with fabulous home baking and scones, all of which are made on the premises. You can sit in or out on the veranda or small lawn with views across farm land to Anstruther and the Isle of May in the Firth of Forth.
The Coffee Shop/Cafe offers a great choice of meals for lunch which includes a Vegetarian Special, Local 'hot smoked' salmon, Goats cheese and caramilised Red Onion Tartlet, 'Anster' Ploughman's lunch, home made soup, bagel, farm house toastie to a fabulous sellection of deswerts.
'Anster' cheese is hand-made on the farm - to a traditional recipe - by Jane Stewart, using unpasteurised milk from her husband Robert's herd of home-bred Holstein Friesian cows.
Both the 'Anster' cheese and the 'St. Andrews Farmhouse' were entered in the 'British Cheese Awards' in Cardiff in September 2011 and both won 'SILVER' Awards, which is a tremendous accollade for such a new business.
This new cheese is fresh and dry, with an almost crumbly texture, which dissolves in the mouth to leave a full-flavoured finish.
In winter, the cows relax on deep straw from last season's grain harvest, and enjoy a diet of preserved grass supplemented with - among other things - barley, brewers' grains and molasses, carefully mixed for a balanced diet.
April is a time of excitement in the herd, as the cows return outside to graze all summer long on the lush pastures overlooking the May Island above the Fife fishing village of Anstruther (from which the cheese takes its name).
Visit us on the farm, where you can watch the cheese -making in progress from our specially constructed Viewing Gallery.
Complete your visit with a light lunch or fresh coffee and home baking in our 'Butterpat' Coffee Shop, with its splendid views down over the Firth of Forth.
Our cheese is available to buy from the Coffee Shop, along with a selection of other British Cheeses - all made by farmers like ourselves, using their home-produced milk to make an artisan cheese on the farm.
We also have a small selection of locally made gifts, crafts and speciality foods - and a large wall space hung with a constantly changing selection of delightful work by local Artists.
