John Cairney's Greasepaint Monkey - An Actor on Acting
The Byre Theatre St Andrews - AB Paterson Auditorium
In an entertaining evening, full of zest and humour, legendary
actor, John Cairney, explores what actors have been doing off
and on stage as they go about their business of pretending to be
someone else in public for money. As someone who’s spent
his professional lifetime acting, he lifts the mask he wears,
looks backstage and invites the audience right into the
rehearsal room. He offers a wealth of hilarious theatre
anecdotes, true and almost true, which add even more colour to
the motley of the professional journeyman actor. He puts the
spotlight on the mystery behind the mystique, the sweat beneath
the greasepaint and the excitement to be found in the second
oldest trade in the world. Ticket Prices: £8 (£5) Box

Sherlock Holmes...The Death and the Life
The Byre Theatre St Andrews - AB Paterson Auditorium
In this wryly humorous tale, of murder, mystery & the
occult.....’the world's greatest detective refuses to leave the
stage!’ ‘A fantasy based upon a fiction’, finds Conan Doyle
tiring of his ‘intolerably arrogant Sherlock Holmes’, and
inventing the malevolent Moriarty, to dispose of him. But
Doyle's dangerous strategy, combined with his passion for
raising the spirits of the dead, has rather more surreal and
dramatic consequences than he bargains for!
After his international success in ‘Sherlock Holmes.... the last
act!’ Roger Llewellyn returns in this spine tingling new play,
written by David Stuart Davies, and directed by Gareth Armstrong
with original music by Simon Slater. 'An actor
completely in charge of his material, his stage and his own
artistry, the vocally impeccable Roger Llewellyn achieves an
almost old-fashioned, and certainly rare, symmetry of excellence
and entertainment' - The Irish Times
'In these elegant hands, this is Holmes as you've always
imagined him - but with a cutting sense of humour'. - Sunday

Souped up Fords
The Inn at Lathones Largoward, St Andrews KY9 1JE
Souped Up Fords have completed a great year including
performances at the Dundee Blues Bonanza and the Arbroath Bell
Rock Blues festival. A three piece firmly based in the blues
ethos of teh 1960s and 1970s. The band idolise the guitar greats
such as Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Johnny Winter and Rory Gallagher.
Initially the Soups produced a five track EP 'Impact' late in
2008 and have followed this up on December 12th 2009 with
'Another ladleful' recorded in Seagate studios in Dundee. The
band has branched out from blues to become what Neil Paterson
calls 'Blues Plus'.We are looking for an edge in our music that
has been present in many earlier incarnations of this type of
music. Our live performances are real and direct. Tickets

The Weir by Conor McPherson
Byre@Cupar, Corn Exchange
In a small bar in rural Ireland, four men vie for the attention
of Valerie, a pretty young woman from Dublin who has just rented
an old house in the area. After a few drinks, they tell stories
of spooky local folklore. But Valerie’s tale, of why she left
Dublin, is melancholy and true – and far more shocking than
anything made up... One of the most praised and successful
plays of the last 15 years, The Weir uncovers moving themes of
loss, abandonment, loneliness and regret for the road not taken.

The Chooky Brae - by D. C. Jackson Directed by Kenny Miller
Designed by Neil Haynes
The Byre Theatre St Andrews - AB Paterson Auditorium
As funny as The Wall, as moving as The Ducky - the final
chapter of The Stewarton trilogy. The Chooky Brae completes
Norma, Rab and Barry’s stories about growing up in small town
Scotland - a story about duty, devotion and enduring love.
It’s Christmas day in Stewarton and Irene Gordon’s struggling to
get in the festive spirit. Her 18 year old daughter Norma’s just
had a baby, her ex-husband Gordon’s just had a stroke and her
eldest Barry’s having a break down. Even the Dr Who Christmas
special is disappointing. If this was a wonderful life she would
receive some angelic intervention - instead she gets Rab
McGuire, and an escaped chicken that won’t be stuffed. A new
comedy about love, duty and free range fowl. Ticket

A Promised Land
The Byre Theatre St Andrews - AB Paterson Auditorium
A Promised Land is a story of freedom and captivity, loyalty
and love, political coercion and personal self-sacrifice. It
revolves around the true story of Dumfriesshire born Jane
Haining , ‘the Scottish Schindler’, who saved many Jewish
children from the fate she was to suffer herself in the gas
chambers of Auschwitz. As the play opens, Rivka Feldman, a
Holocaust survivor, and friend of Jane’s, has entered post-war
Scotland illegally, armed with a gun. Not without irony or
humour, this is a play about hope and reconciliation which
raises many issues of relevance today in a challenging way
through a controversial story. Premiered at the Scottish
Storytelling Centre during the 2009 Edinburgh Festival Fringe,
this new play casts a spotlight on the life of the Church of
Scotland missionary Jane Haining, sometimes referred to as “The
Scottish Schindler”. The play breaks fresh ground in our
understanding of Jane’s work with Jewish children, mostly
orphans, in Budapest and her subsequent murder in Auschwitz.
Jane is the only Scot recognised as 'Righteous Among Nations' at
Yad Vashem the Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem. Since its first
performance, the British government has honoured Jane Haining
posthumously with a new British Heroes of the Holocaust award.
