Walden
The Byre Theatre St Andrews - AB Paterson Auditorium
by Henry David Thoreau adapted and directed by Nicholas Bone
designed by Sans façon
On 4th July 1845, Henry David Thoreau walked into the woods near
his home town of Concord, Massachusetts and decided to stay. He
found a spot next to a lake called Walden Pond and built a hut.
For the next two years he attempted to live entirely by his own
resources. Walden, Thoreau’s account of his ‘experiment in
simple living’ is one of the most extraordinary and
unclassifiable books ever written. Following rave reviews and
sell-out performances in 2008 and 2009, Magnetic North once
again presents its beautiful one-man adaptation of this classic
meditation on self-sufficiency, the individual’s relationship
with the environment and the desire ‘not to live cheaply or
dearly but to live deliberately’. Performed in a unique,
intimate setting designed by visual artists Sans façon, the
capacity for each performance of Walden is strictly limited.

Rab Noakes with Fraser Speirs
The Inn at Lathones Largoward, St Andrews
Rab Noakes is a force to be reckoned with in the world of
music in Scotland and beyond.
A recent preview piece in The Herald went thus: Not that
you would know it from his lean rock’n’roll physique but Rab
Noakes is now in his sixties. His four decades of involvement in
music have been marked by two recent releases: a second album
with his occasional band The Varaflames, titled Unlimited
Mileage, and the release on CD for the first time of his debut
album Do You See The Lights? which first saw the light of day in
1970. Showcasing an exemplary taste in covers alongside his own
songwriting, a Noakes show is a decidedly non-fusty lesson in
the history of popular music. 2010 sees the release of no less
than three new albums from Rab. One is a live one from Edinburgh
in 2005. One is a collection of songs by Boudleaux & Felice
Bryant and the other Standing Up Again is a new collection from
2009. Tickets £16 Tel: 01334 840494 Booking / Ticket Information

Fusing breakdance, physical theatre, film and animation ‘Watch

‘Such a Bloke’ by award winning choreographer Janis Claxton,
offers an emotionally driven look into frustration and futility
from a personal insight. Gripping and unpredictable, both pieces
are an absolute must see. “A show that’s as clever as its

Carmen by Georges Bizet
The Byre Theatre St Andrews - AB Paterson Auditorium
Sung in English New translation by Christopher Cowell Orchestral
re-working by Derek Clark
Beautiful gypsies, obsession, bullfighters and some of the
liveliest rhythms in opera… it can only be Carmen. This new
production is set in 1960s Spain, a country firmly entrenched in
General Franco’s right-wing regime. Women are oppressed, the
gypsies ghettoised, the country is riddled with poverty, and
black-market smuggling is rife. As a woman wanting to break
free, the stakes are high for Carmen. An outspoken gypsy with a
beautiful face and a fiery temper, she sets her sights on the
soldier Don José. His desire leads him to deny his friends and
position and he is soon living a life outside the law. As his
relationship with Carmen disintegrates and she leaves him for
another, he sets out to prove his love, but Carmen has seen the
future in her tarot cards and it isn’t a happy one.
Bizet’s boldly seductive opera has been one of the world’s
favourites for over a century. From the sultry ‘Habanera’ to the
naively passionate ‘Flower Song’ and the rousing ‘Toreador’s

Hamlet: Prince of Denmark
The Byre Theatre St Andrews - AB Paterson Auditorium
Does revenge justify murder? The spirit of a murdered king, the
wrath of a vengeful son, and the turmoil of Denmark in 1604.
Shakespeare’s most iconic and challenging play - arguably the
world’s greatest dramatic work - tells the tale of young Prince
Hamlet avenging his father’s death and fighting the new King who
stole his throne. He questions: Do I murder the king now
or wait for proof? Are women constant and worthy or flippant and
unfaithful? Is life worth living? To be or not to be…
Hamlet asks these questions as he struggles to find one moral
absolute in a murderous, corrupt world. Condensed and
using solely Shakespeare’s text, this will be a fresh, kinetic,
and above all accessible production, perfect for students and
adults alike to learn or re-visit the story. Ticket Prices: £14

The Tobacco Merchant’s Lawyer
Byre@Culross
From 1780 a quintessential piece of Glasgow in 2010. In the
Merchant City, Glasgow is booming but the American war is
looming. The city’s wealth is dependent on American tobacco.
Will the great port survive? This pressing question is NOT
addressed by Enoch Dalmellington, resident of Virginia St. He is
more concerned about marrying off his dreich pious humourless
daughter Euphemia, being able to afford his pew at the Tron Kirk
and what to do about Mistress Zapata’s scurrilous predictions
about Glasgow in 2010. ‘Women will be attending
university, the poor will all have water closets and tobacco
smoking will be banned in public places...’ Ticket Prices:

Paperbelle
Lawrence Levy Studio Theatre St Andrews
Paperbelle’s world is blank and plain and she likes it that way.
She’s heard of colour; but would prefer things to stay as they
are – blank and plain.
The colours, on the other hand, want to play games and they want
Paperbelle to join in.
Paperbelle’s world is changing - will she try to stop it or
might she find it’s not as bad as it first seemed… From
