St Andrews University is Scotland's
oldest University and the third oldest in Britain. Recently
Prince William attended the university, drawing much world wide
publicity to St Andrews and the university. There are many
ancient building associated with the university that gives St
Andrews a distinct old town feeling.
The
Old Course St Andrews, the Royal
and Ancient Golf Club and the British Golf Museum are
all situated in the town. The only world championship course
which finishes in the middle of a town with the
1st tee and 18th green, starting and finishing the famous old course, in St Andrews.
In the East
Fife towns a short distance from St Andrews, lived many
wealthy lords and merchants all leaving their mark. The
villages of Anstruther, Ceres, Crail, Falkland and Pittenween
all offering their own distinct atmosphere, unlike today's
modern towns.

You will find excellent examples of
castles
and great houses where the gentry lived. These
will take you time to enjoy, many lavishly decorated and furnished with period
pieces. The gardens of these magnificent places are often worth a visit in their own
right, the combination of the buildings and gardens make a
wonderful day out.

St Andrews has a third dimension to it,
and that is, the
religious churches and cathedrals. The
massive ruins of St Andrews Cathedral is a must to explore,
in the grounds of which is the tower of an even earlier church St Rules
tower. It is well worth climbing St Rules tower to get a birds
eye view of St Andrews. Black Friars Chapel is another ancient
ruin you will discover in South Street.
