Kellie Castle and Garden is
in the care of the National Trust of Scotland. A 14th century
castle with magnificent plaster ceilings and painted panelling,
fine furniture designed by Sir Robert Lorimer and a long concealed
mural by Phoebe Anna Traquai.
The first record of Kellie dates as far back as
1150. The Kellie Castle we see today was built in the
shape of an E plan tower, on the site of a castle dating from the
1100s. It consists of a three story main block with three large
square towers that form the arms of the E.
In 1613 the property was purchased by Sir Thomas Erskine - who had saved the life of King James VI of Scotland and James I of England. During the King's only visit to Scotland, after be became King of England he stayed at Kellie Castle in 1617.
Today the castle is
owned by the National Trust for Scotland who have kept the
building looking as it did in the late 1800s. Unlike many a grand
castle it looks like a family home - with toys and a rocking horse
in the nursery and cooking pots in the kitchen. The late Victorian
garden has an excellent collection of old-fashioned roses and
herbaceous borders, which are cultivated organically.
Castle Open 1 Apr to 31 October, best to phone to check opening times as times do vary through out the season.
Garden Open all year.
