Hill of Tarvit
Mansion House reflects the life style of Frederick
Bower Sharp who had made his fortune in Dundee's jute industry as
mill owners. He wanted somewhere to house his already extensive
collection of paintings, tapestries, furniture and
porcelain,
so he engaged the architect Sir Robert Lorimer, who between 1904 to
1906 transformed the original house to the new mansion house,
called Hill of Tarvit.
Sir Robert Lorimer replaced the main block of the
earlier house, while retaining the rear service wings. The
new Hill of Tarvit Mansion House was fitted with all modern
conveniences, including electricity, an internal phone system and
central heating. A 9-hole golf course
was added in 1924 to the south of the house.
The Hill of Tarvit Mansion House has a magnificent garden with formal lawns, colourful borders and a sunken rose garden.
Garden Open all year daily until dusk.
House Open from 1st April to 31st October 1pm to 5pm (last entry 4.15pm)
